Development

A movie based on the 1980s TV series The Fall Guy was reportedly in development, according to a Los Angeles Times article of July 2010. Martin Campbell was in talks to direct the movie, and DreamWorks Pictures was working with producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald on the project. DreamWorks was tasked with distributing the movie in North America, Latin America, Russia, Australia, and Asia under the Touchstone Pictures distribution label of the Walt Disney Studios. Mister Smith Entertainment was responsible for handling sales in the remaining areas. Dwayne Johnson was in talks to play the lead role, and McG was in talks to direct in September 2013.

Ryan Gosling, David Leitch, and Drew Pearce were supposed to be working on a “unnamed stuntman film” that Universal Pictures had acquired in September 2020. It was confirmed in May 2022 that this project was a movie version of The Fall Guy. The movie, which is loosely based on the TV show, is produced by Universal in collaboration with Leitch’s 87North Productions and Gosling’s Entertainment 360. Gosling, Guymon Casady, Kelly McCormick, and Leitch serve as producers. Along with Glen A. Larson, the creator of the original series, and Geoff Shaevitz, Pearce serves as an executive producer.

According to Variety, the Australian Government and the state authorities of New South Wales additionally contributed A$30 million and A$14.5 million to the production, respectively. Paul Fletcher, Australia’s Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, estimated that the local economy would benefit greatly from the involvement of over 1,000 Australian cast and crew members and over 3,015 Australian film extras.

Casting

In August 2022, Emily Blunt was cast. October saw the addition of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Stephanie Hsu, while November saw the casting of Teresa Palmer, Hannah Waddingham, and Winston Duke.

Gosling stated that for his part in the movie’s love tale, he was inspired by Leitch and Kelly McCormick, his producer wife. Before Blunt saw a draft of the script, her role—which had previously been supposed to be that of a makeup artist—was changed to that of a first-time director. Blunt offered some commentary on the role, saying, “I think maybe in the original script, she was quite severe, and that sort of tough director,” adding that “we all kind of built her together.” Blunt also thought it would be more interesting to see a person who is “in a situation where they’re way over their head.”

Filming

At Disney Studios Australia in Moore Park, Sydney, principal photography began in October 2022. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was closed during the day in January 2023 so that Gosling could film certain scenes.

The action scenes in the movie were expertly orchestrated and used actual stunts. “It was a love letter to stunts. We knew we had to be authentic in that world.” Leitch said. With eight and a half cannon rolls done by stunt driver Logan Holladay, it broke the Guinness World Record for the most cannon rolls in a car.

Music

Dominic Lewis, who also composed the music for Bullet Train, wrote the score for The Fall Guy. The theme song for the show, originally performed by Lee Majors, was covered by Blake Shelton for the album.
